I’ve always loved the artwork soldiers used to paint on the side of their planes however a while ago I stumbled across a page dedicated to the lighters of soldiers (similar to the first Image) and I found all the simple messages engraved to be amazing, but today I found an article about how this has been updated to the modern age so to speak. Soldiers are now engraving the phones they take with them to war with the messages instead of the lighters, what really amazed me is how good some actually where. Just thought it was nice to see how a little bit of design can give people inspiration in the toughest times, the power of design eh ;)

So I know there’s about 1000 different examples of these but I really like the way the ice cream and tribal mask? I don’t know what it’s called but yeah there really unique and not just the usual paint and stuff, I’ve decided I may have to invest in a few mask and try my own versions over summer

So I read an article today on buzzfeed all about Guinness and the pouring time, what I found interesting is just how deep the branding of Guinness actually is. For a start they give out a manual on just how to pour the drink, in short it says always use a Guinness glass, tilt it at a 45 degree angle, pour the drink, wait for it to settle and then top it up. The exact time to wait for it to settle is 1 minute 32.4seconds. I find it really strange that they have such strict guidelines to pouring a drink yet the rest of the article basically goes on to say the wait doesn’t have any effect and was just a marketing ploy from when they changed over from wooden to metal barrels in which the technology needed to add nitrogen to make the fizz. Nowadays it’s all in the same barrel so there is no need to let it sit. It just shows how marketing can stick over so many years even if there is no use. It’s also interesting that all Guinness adverts are the same length of time as the time your have to wait for your pint to settle.

So a little update on my blood typography, I think the actual blood has worked out really well, if I add more liquid blood over the top I think itl look awesome, just need to work on a proper mould which will allow me to get the jelly out without wrapping it

So I’m hoping to do a little mini photography based around movies, in particular 1980s films, this is a test for my lost boys blood typography, it’s hard enough trying to get a realistic looking colour Nevermind one that will set, hopefully in a couple of hours il have at least one recipe that has set well and I can use to create all the letters I need. I did try to make the letter t but I have a funny feeling there going to turn out looking more like cocks, which obviously I will need to avoid in the final one, ah well it’s only a first test

Just noticed this on a maps page on twitter, they usually just upload simple maps and stuff but I thought this was rather nice to see how Europe can be divided into various categories, also works really nice as an info graphic

PRO CON 3 EVALUATION

I feel that pro con 3 has gone really well this year, For my site I am happy with both the overall design and the coding however I feel both need improvement, However I shall get my site live as soon as possible and then work on a new one in the meantime, this will allow me to keep my presence on the internet once it is up instead of having to take it up and down all the time. Being able to code the site has has been a great experience and has led me to receive 3 other sites to code over summer.

My blog I feel has gone kind of well, ive tried to blog weekly and daily however because the majority of briefs are live I cant post any of this work up which has meant the last section of my blog has been left empty.  ( tash said its okay to just hand a pdf in when I can )

Because of these live briefs I have gained valuable experience designing for industry and other clients, layout, and print. I feel that these were the most important part for me this year as they allowed me to gain some confidence in both myself and my work and allowed me to get out there and network etc. As a result the briefs are coming in steadily and I feel that after university I will be okay for work for a while.

Briefs

Unsung hero

Parody t-shirt designs using the muppets – Brief went well, received positive feedback and it opened my eyes up to computer illustration. First experience of presenting to industry.

Beautiful books

Papercut peter pan book scenes – again positive feedback, was something that ive always wanted to try, I feel I could experiment with these in future and possibly make the full series

Pooch pals

App and range of dog treats and leads – Positive feedback from everyone including vivid at the roses competition. Feel as though it didn’t look to finalized, could have been pushed well further. May develop during summer.

Bear alphabites

Cyrptozoological alphabet for back of ceral boxes – again I feel this could be improved now my illustration has got better, going to leave it for now may re do in the future

Disertation

I passed. Nuff said.

Pro con 3

Overall I feel the design of my site works, its nice and simple however I feel my portfolio images need work on so I will redesign at some point.

NMP

Gregory the greenfield giant – Im working on the illustrations for a childrens book wrote by Chris Horrocks (glue media) ill post up whenever I can but due to it not being published yet it wont be for a while

Other work – all still live briefs and in development. These will be posted on blog whenever I have approval from the clients.

Wedding photography

Gregory the greenfield giant – book series which im illustrating, will post up whenever I can. Expected to be on going for a year or two at least.

Just clean – exterior renovation branding including logo, brand guidelines, stationary, Leaflets and website. This is still in the process so again I will post up whenever I can

NWS – unestablished paving company which I am in the process of creating logo, branding, stationary, leaflets and website.

Social media footprint

Tumblr - http://jaketynan.tumblr.com

Linked in - http://www.linkedin.com/pub/jake-tynan/69/171/a81

Twitter – http://www.twitter.com/@jayke_1992

Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/jake.tynan.7

Costa del salford site - http://costadelsalford.co.uk/jake-tynan/

After adding clients earlier in the year on both my personal twitter and facebook I feel these are much more important than just design ones, as they allow people to see a little part of who I am (although I admit I did need to tidy them up first to make me look a little more professional ). I have had great success with twitter and since Chris at Gluemedia started to mention me I have been added by several designers and companies, I hope to continue this networking throughout the summer and facebook, twitter etc allow you to do this on a daily basis.

Talks etc

  • Empoyability day – talked at media city included presenter Penny Haslam talking about how she got to where she did, gave us a really decent insight. Told us to have something unique about us eg. Comedy.
  • Designing for web with Andy Golpys
  • Java script lessons with Jason mayo
  • Book binding classes with Hannah Gibson
  • GFSmith paper talk with Jane Crowther – really opened up my eyes to the range of paper available, although I did tend to choose nice paper anyway I now have a lot more knowledge.

Placements – Currently working on illustrating a childrens book for chris horrocks, although this isn’t a design firm or a daily placement it has given me a lot of confidence at presenting to industry and official people,  Hopefully going to be continuing this for a while including apps etc which should allow me to get experience with an App design agency.

And here is my final site. I know its not pixel perfect and my portfolios need work but I’m rather happy with it for now, gonna pay to get it live and work on a new site over summer but considering every time i look at a page of code i feel like crying, I’m rather proud that i managed to get my head around it (kind of)

Final header and footer for my site
